Steven Schmid

$3,400.00

Steven Schmid is a Bahamian interdisciplinary artist whose practice utilizes drawing, painting and collage to explore themes of nostalgia, masculinity and otherness.

Schmid received his BFA in Film, Video and Integrated Media from Emily Carr University of Art + Design in 2016 and is currently pursuing a MFA in Studio Art at OCAD University.

Schmid’s current research explores the ways in which patriarchal masculinity defines Caribbean identities and the innovative approaches needed to disrupt its structural integrity. As a Bahamian artist living in Canada, adopting a sample-based practice that amalgamates various points of interest becomes essential in highlighting the complexities and uniqueness of Caribbean nations and demonstrates how a Hip-Hop sampling approach to unlearning can imagine alternative forms of masculinity and individualism. The outcome is grounded in a figurative and fantastical reimagining of personal narratives that illustrate the intricacies and malleability of the Bahamian and wider Caribbean diaspora.
