KEEYA is a multimedia artist and performer from Nassau, Bahamas. Working primarily in digital and mixed media collage, her work is both an exploration and celebration of her identity as a Queer Black woman. KEEYA released her debut EP ‘Paradise’ with Alacran Records in 2020, and is currently working on her first studio album. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and has exhibited at galleries in The Bahamas, The United States and Germany.
Like many others who came before her, KEEYA understands self portraits as a powerful tool to document, remember, and retell stories about her life and surroundings. As a young person without the tools to process traumatic events, she found community and family among those who dared to invent themselves as an act of survival. These pieces are a snapshot of a series in progress. The work is an exploration and celebration of the alchemy of performance and the self actualization that queerness necessitates.
