Demarcus McGaughey

$1,000.00
Demarcus McGaughey is a mixed media artist currently based in NY. McGaughey views art as a narrative, and he uses his work to reveal stories of resilience in his subjects. He aims to uncover the beauty of their scars; the strength of their vulnerability; the wonderment of their excellence. McGaughey's works deliver a raw look into each individual’s soul coupled with nods to cultural influence. Each piece is a collision of his passions and real-world experiences, blending colors, pop art, graphic design, life coaching, and storytelling on his canvases.
"I have always been intrigued by the mind, especially the stories people tell themselves. As a result, in my art, I assume a narrator role—telling heroic stories of my subject’s self-actualization and self-determination. "

  • This work is a narrative about grieving and the state of mind of the subject. It depicts on mental health and the process of thinking. The bright colors are influenced by McGaughey's time in the caribbean.
  • McGaughey has always been intrigued by the mind, especially the stories people tell themselves. As a result, he assumes the role of the narrator in his work—telling heroic stories of my subject’s self-actualization and self-determination.
  • Inspired by Barkley Hendricks, who famously captured Black people in all their coolness, Demarcus creates his subjects in visions that are larger-than-life. Drawing inspiration from Andy Warhol’s esteemed artistry in pop art, he combines painting, photography, mixed media, and graphic design. This exploration of styles, techniques, and color combinations on canvas allows him to express the spectrum of moods among his subjects.
  • McGaughey paints victorious overcomers, highlighting a thematic narrative of Black triumph over tribulation.
