Pretty Is As Pretty Does

Mandy Cano Villalobos is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice spans installation, painting, performance, sculpture and video. Her work addresses how we experience time, our understanding of chronological progression, collective and personal memory, and the atemporal nature of ritual. She sees mark-making is an intimate process that allows her to live into each moment in the present, as it passes. In a world of social media bombardment and alienation, the artist reclaims the slow, imperfect nature of humanity.
  • Earlier this year I was gifted a box of discarded papers. These leftover letters, sci-fi books, song sheets, and postcards offered me a glimpse into the life of the former owner, now dead. Combining my ritualistic burning process and my interest in personal narratives, I began a series of hand-scorched papers. Each hole records a passing moment, as each paper chronicles the life history of an absent subject

  • I was the weird kid that bought musty books at yard sales and made installations in my bedroom closet. I also tuned in to Saturday morning Polka on am radio while designing victorian dresses for made-up characters. All of my work goes back to this.” - Mandy Cano Villalobos
