"Mercy"

Arturo Cabrera

$2,000.00

Arturo Cabrera (b. 1993) is a Brooklyn based artist who specializes in portraiture. His work aspires to capture the internal spiritual nature of his sitters. His paintings incorporate gold, silver and copper leaf – representing the inner glimmer of the human soul.

After graduating with numerous awards from the Lehigh Valley Charter High School for the Arts in 2012, he was awarded a year-long residency at the Arts Quest’s Banana Factory in Bethlehem, PA, where he held a private studio. Cabrera then moved to New York City in 2014, where he worked for the renowned Jeff Koons Studios for two years.

Cabrera is a member of both the Salmagundi Club and the Art Students League of New York. He has been taught by many artists including Alyssa Monks, Max Ginsburg, Alonsa Guevara and Michelle Doll.

Humanism II, Cabrera’s most recent solo show in New York, opened at Dacia Gallery in Soho in October 2018. His work is featured in private collections throughout America and Europe and is in the permanent collections of the Hunterdon Art Museum, Lehigh University Art Galleries and the Lehigh Valley Health Network

He is mesmerized by portraiture—gazing at someone until he no longer recognize them, building their image back up through mark making until they appear again, a bottom lip catching light, a golden wisp of hair, the gentle curve of a clavicle. He still don’t know what it all means, but he knows how he feels when he captures it. There is no better feeling in the world, it’s enough for him.

A double portrait I did of my friend Mercy. I wanted to capture her fun and playful nature. I really wanted to play with the background of this painting. I thought it would be playful to overlap the figure with the lake at the bottom of the painting to further express how fun and unexpected my friend is.
