Rosie Lee
For Rosie Lee, the new America we have come to know wouldn’t exist without the presence of black bodies. Therefore, his paintings serve as repositories paying tribute to the diversity found within blackness. His artwork is vivid in color, regal in presentation, and acts as celebratory reflections. Compositionally, he use a grid-like format and graphic flatness to push beyond the canvas. A process of construction and deconstruction creates elements of movement. It is his belief simplicity encourages viewers to engage with the social and political undertones in his art. Plus, keeping a practical approach of simplicity creates a balance between color and abstraction. The intent is to make the paint as immediate and topical as possible. Good art raises questions and provides answers in one's imagination. For that reason, Rosie Lee is looking to challenge ideas about black representation with a distinct color palette and poetic form.
