Like many others who came before her, KEEYA understands self portraits as a powerful tool to document, remember, and retell stories about her life and surroundings. As a young person without the tools to process traumatic events, she found community and family among those who dared to invent themselves as an act of survival. These pieces are a snapshot of a series in progress. The work is an exploration and celebration of the alchemy of performance and the self actualization that queerness necessitates.
